LAST STAND by June Schwartz Autumn-- The acriid smell of burning leaves Wafted on the burning air; Weak sunlight filtering through the oak, maple, and poplar, Turning the leaves to flame, saffron, scarlet, and emerald Black, lacy silhouette of the oak Against the steel-gray satin sky; The lonely cry of the loon On a cold midnight lake, The raucous screams of birds Streaking south; The sense of urgency that grips When Summer makes her last Valiant stand Against Winter's overpowering Force.
