Hello Fellow Burros, To paraphrase Bob Seger, Fifty years now, where'd they go? For me - Journalism degree UT-K '69. Newspaperman editing and writing in Knoxville, Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Miami Beach. Associated Press writer and editor Miami and Washington D.C. VP of Publications National Association of Realtors, Washington and Chicago. La di da. Been retired, aka unemployed, since age 49. Not working sure beats working. Stock market timing can be successful. Low point - lost my wife of 16 years in 1992, to cancer. High point - married my current (and last) wife, Astrid, 18 years ago in the British Virgin Islands. We're loving life as much as anyone could here in Sarasota County FL. Memories of HHS. Coming from Parmer Elementary, that first day in the fall of '61, stepping off the bus in front of Hillsboro High School, damn! This place is big! How many of you remember Principal Mr. Koen (Cohen?), our freshman year, who then handed over the reins to Mr. Harris? By sophomore year, I knew every inch of HHS, and hated every inch of that gym presided over by "Physical Ed" Hesse. I hated the pep rallies, but it was fun to see Tam up there shaking her pom poms. And Sam up on stage with his guitar while Mr. Harris played harmonica. Sara, our brightest student in the Class of '65, wasn't a cheerleader as I remember, but do I remember right that Sara was our star Burros basketball player? Those were the days, my friends, we thought they'd never end. So many people, some I don't remember, but many I do. Painful, the ones now gone. Carla Wiebeck, my freshman prom date and girl next door, gone. Spike Adams and Dutch Adkisson, alphabetically in front and back of me all those years, gone. Kay Tarpley, whom I dated awhile our junior year, but now I learn she died at age 19. Fifty years, wow. This will be fun. The only ones of you I've had any contact at all with this past half century are my best school friends Bob Neaderthal and Kin Moore, and with them only by phone and email the last few pre-reunion weeks. I hope some of you others remember me and say hello, no matter what we look like now. And know that, at least in my mind, each of you will always be ...Forever Young. -- Bill A ADDITION on July 13. Muchas gracias to all of you Class of '65 folks who have put this reunion together. The time and effort you've expended to make this happen is invaluable. I look forward to seeing all of you. I will be wearing tan khaki slacks and a blue dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up -- my high school uniform. I hope all the girls are wearing mini-skirts. Yeah, those were the days. -- Bill A |

I am looking forward to seeing, hopefully, many old...I mean friends from the past..haha! My husband Bob Williams and I live across the road from Percy Priest Lake between Mt. Juliet and Smyrna. We have been together 7 years and married 4 months...we are very happy newlyweds. While I am retired from MNPS, he has a year to go before he leaves MNPS (yes that's where we met) then we will be moving to our home on Pine Island (about 5 miles from Sanibel Island in southwest Florida). So I feel very lucky that our reunion is this year. All 3 of my children and my 4 grandchildren live in middle TN...Bob's 3 children and 2 and 1/2 grandchildren..one on the way also live in the area. We stay busy with familhy, friends, boating, camping and partying. I have only run into a couple of classmates over the years...I have moved around quite a bit, so this is exciting for me! |

Comment: After college I worked for 3 different companies until 1976. Our daughter was born in 1977 and our son in 1985 and we now have 2 granddaughters - ages 12 & 15. Our daughter and family live in Brentwood so I get to see the girls often which is great. Our son lives in Nashville and is not married. I worked for 5 years after our children were grown as the Event Coordinator at the Factory at Franklin but have not worked since then. I am just enjoying friends, family, traveling and playing. Life is good.

Comment: Thanks so much to everyone on the Reunion committee! You all do such a wonderful job of getting out the information and making sure everyone is contacted! I wanted so to be there, but have been diagnosed stage four pancreatic cancer and am doing the chemo treatments! It has been going on for about a year, so I am fighting! Some of the pictures of you look better than when we were in high school!! I am so happy to see how many of you are living relaxed lives after years of following your chosen occupations and doing so well!! Congratulations to all! Thanks, too, to our Mary De for all the emails and updates! Will miss you all but my heart is in Nashville with you! Judi Atkinson

I am sorry to miss our reunion and really enjoyed seeing pictures and summaries of how some of us have turned out, especially all my choir friends - we have done pretty well! After college I taught Jr./Sr. high science and chemistry in RI, then got a Masters Degree in Environmental Health from Temple University. Last year I completed a 40 year career in the practice of Occupational Health and Safety, working for several chemical companies and finally with ERM, a global environmental engineering company, as a Partner. I have visited Nashville over the years for conferences and work in Paducah, drove past "home" on Estes Road, went in to HHS lobby just to see how it felt after so long. We left for Rhode Island right after graduation and so I did not ease myself away as others did. I have been very happily married since 1969 to Joan, a retired elementary school counselor and Pennsylvanian, who I met in college. We have lived and raised a family in Madison and Florham Park, NJ and here in West Chester. We have two great daughters, Beth, an environmental scientist, and Amy, a chemical engineer/now stay at home mom. Five grandchildren. I hike a lot and we have just staarted doing some Viking river cruises. As as an avocation I have written over 40 SATB church anthems which have been sung locallly and can be found/heard at sheetmusicplus.com under my name as composer. It is easy to be nostalgic about our times together 50 years ago. We made some stong and formative connections roaming the halls that we can recall fondly. On the other hand - life is good right now and I wish us all good health and happiness. Best to all! |
