DeAnne Woods (Roper)

Marital status: Married
Children: 2
Occupation: Retired
Comment: After graduating from the University of Tennessee, I taught school for several years before starting a family.  John and I have two children; our son and his wife live in Zionsville, Indiana (Indianapolis) and have two boys.  Our daughter and her husband have one daughter, and live very close to us in Kingwood, Texas (Houston).

John and I have had the good fortune to live in many cities in this wonderful country of ours.  In each place, we have pursued different interests and made some wonderful friends along the way.  We are in the process of settling in our “forever” home, having sold two homes and purchasing one in the past several weeks.  The timing of these moves has been unfortunate, causing us to be unable to attend our 50th Reunion.

I, too, want to thank the reunion committee for the time and energy they have put into the planning of our reunion.  Also, a special thanks to Mary De for keeping us informed about our classmates.  I know the reunion will be a great success and a lot of fun, adding to HHS memories.

Comment: DeAnne and I married while attending the University of Tennessee.  We have a son and daughter with 3 grandchildren.  We regret we are unable to attend the reunion as we are in the progress of consolidation of homes.  In July, we sold our home in Charleston, purchased a home in Houston and are selling our current Houston home.

My entire career has been in aerospace primarily working for Vought Aircraft on major subcontracts for Boeing.  For the last 20 years, my business has required us to live twice in South Carolina.  I retired in 2010 after Boeing purchased the 787 fuselage assembly facility in Charleston from the Vought-Alenia joint venture.

Diane Wright (Hall)

Marital status: Married
Occupation: Real Estate Broker
Comment: Upon graduating from Peabody, receiving a BA degree with an area major in Art and a minor in Psychology, I became head of the Art department at Cumberland College. I later taught at Franklin Jr High in Franklin, TN, as well as Adult Education art classes for Metro Nashville, and was an art supervisor with the Metro Parks summer programs.

My interest in the creative arts expanded, and I enrolled in The O'More School of Design in Franklin, TN, and began working as an Interior Design consultant. My main focus was in residential, but I also had a variety of commercial clients, including country clubs and hospitality lounges at the Nashville Metro Airport. One such work resulted in receiving a highly complementary note from Princess Grace of Monaco, upon her visiting the VIP lounge I had designed and decorated.

In 1977, I was extremely fortunate to be one of 200 Nashville citizens to be selected to participate in President Jimmy Carter's Friendship Force International exchange program with Caracas, Venezuela. We stayed with local families and were exposed to their culture, were treated to a grand gala at the Presidential palace, and so much more. It was an experience of a lifetime!

Besides South America, I have also been able to enjoy trips to Europe, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and more, plus all over our beautiful country.

I embarked on a real estate career and integrated my interest, training, and experience in interior design with my real estate business. During this time, along with assisting clients in the buying and selling of their homes, I expanded my services to include staging and re-design, all of which, together, have become my true passion.

Along the way, I met and married my husband, Richard. He later retired with over 35 years in law enforcement. Starting with the FBI in DC, then Knoxville PD, he then spent over 30+ years as a Special Agent, ASAC and SAC with the TBI, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. We have been married 30 years, and he is now a different kind of agent, real estate, and we work together as a team in our real estate business.

Over the years, I've enjoyed riding horses, gardening and landscape design, being on the water and at the beach in Destin. Richard and I also love going to Gatlinburg. Richard loves computers and technology, Sci-fi movies, and watching NASCAR auto racing.

We had a Bichon-Poodle named Bijou that we absolutely adored. He was just a delight and brought us so much joy. Unfortunately, we lost him in 2013. In 2020, we rescused a male Havanese, and 3 months later, adopted a sweet female Havanese. They have really brightened our household and are a welcomed addition.

I have nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, all of whom I dearly love. But, as some live in NY. and some live in Florida, we don't get to see them as often as we would like. Richard has a daughter who lives in Maryville.

For me, it has been a winding road, but, like someone once said, paraphrasing, it's not the destination, but the journey...therein lies the richness that is added to one's life.

Comment: After graduating from Vanderbilt, I continued on to graduate school, receiving an MA in English from Vanderbilt and a PhD from Miami of Ohio.  I have spent most of the past five decades teaching English and coaching basketball at a series of independent secondary schools—Montgomery Bell Academy and Harpeth Hall in Nashville, UMS-Wright School in Mobile and (most recently) at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin TX.

During these years I was fortunate enough to receive two National Endowment for the Humanities grants—the first at Occidental College in Los Angeles to study Freud, and the second, in the summer of 2007, to study Dante in Siena, Italy.  At St. Stephen’s I also served as head boys’ basketball coach.  During my ten years there, our teams compiled a record of 207-67 (82-20 in league play).

Since retiring in 2009, I have been writing full time, producing three novels, a family history and a critical study of Cormac McCarthy.  My Amazon author page:  https://www.amazon.com/Thomas-D-Young/e/B06ZZ764XR/ref=sr_tc_2_0?qid=1502895115&sr=1-2-ent

For the past 30 years I’ve been married to the former Victoria Timmerman; we met in graduate school.  We have two grown sons, both of whom live in or near Austin, and two grandchildren.
