MaryDe Elliston (Heckman)

Marital status: Widowed
Children: 2
Occupation: retired Senior Account Mgr - Thomson Reuters
Comment: I graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1969 with a BA in English and History.  I thought I wanted to teach, but 6 weeks of student teaching convinced me otherwise. So I went into sales, "teaching" adults why they should buy the specific products I was selling.  I retired in 2011 after 27 years with Thomson Reuters (formerly Prentice Hall) selling business and tax research material to CPAs, tax attorneys, corporations, colleges and universities.

For 10 years I've had an antique booth at Gas Lamp, Too Antique Mall across from 100 Oaks (just down Powell Court from the original Gas Lamp). In 2018, I "downsized" to a showcase which is more manageable while still allowing me to fulfill my need to sell something.

I was married for more than 36 years to Bill Elliston who passed away in March 2014.  Bill was a Vanderbilt graduate and their best fan.  My love of Vanderbilt sports goes back to childhood so we were a perfect match.  I still have football, basketball and baseball (1st row over the VU dugout) season tickets.

I have 2 children; Jeff Ligon - age 51 (his dad is Dave Ligon), and Katie Elliston Mehaffey - age 36; 6 grandchildren - Steven Ligon age 17, Lacey Ligon age 9 and Jeff's stepdaughter Grace who is 13. Katie has 3 girls: Quinn age 5, Ellie age 3 and Mary Hyde who turned 1 the day after my birthday.  I have a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Elliston Josephson who lives in Cookeville and my stepson, Billy Elliston, lives in Roanoke, VA. Elizabeth and Billy have no children so they help me spoil my grandchildren.

I've served as the president of the Nashville ADPi Alumnae Association 3 times over the past 45+ years giving me the opportunity to continue a friendship with Warneta Alexander Conner which began in the 2nd grade at Julia Green. I am a member of the Ft. Nashborough Chapter DAR.  I have served as Chapter Regent and am currently serving as Chapter Chaplain and State Committee Chair for DAR Schools. I also belong to Colonial Dames.  I've been infatuated with miniatures and doll houses since I was a little girl, but the hobby for me didn't start until the mid-1970s.  I have many doll houses of various scales all over my house and thoroughly enjoy the creation of something tiny.  I belong to a miniature club with 7 other like-minded souls.

I've really enjoyed working on the reunion committees over the years, but more than that, I've enjoyed being in touch with my classmates.  1965 just seems like yesterday when I'm communicating with you via email or actually on the telephone.  So many old friendships have been strengthened or rekindled and new ones have been formed.  As we all celebrate our 75 birthdays this year, old friends seem even more important.  We cherish the memories of those who have passed away and look forward to spending time with those who are able to gather together whenever possible.  We may look a little older, but we are all 18 at heart!!
